Self Weighing and Checkout Solution for Smart Canteen

Self checkout terminal for canteen

Solution Overview

Newcapec smart dining solution serves campuses, corporate cafeterias, and other food service operations with three core solutions: Self-service weighing and checkout, AI-powered checkout, and RFID-based checkout. Supporting face recognition, card, and QR code payments, it streamlines the entire dining process — from self-service meal selection to fast checkout and data management, helping food service operators reduce costs, improve efficiency, and optimize operations while delivering a faster, more convenient, and more flexible dining experience.

Major Challenges in Traditional Canteen Operations

long queues

Long Queues and Slow Checkout
Long queues and slow checkout reduce dining efficiency during peak hours.

high labors

High Labor and Operating Costs
High labor costs increase as more staff are needed for daily operations.

waste food

Inconsistent Portions and Food Waste
Fixed portions often cause food waste and fail to meet personal needs.

payment disputes

Manual Pricing Errors and Payment Disputes
Manual calculations can lead to incorrect charges and reconciliation issues, especially during busy periods.

limited meal choices

Limited Meal Choices and Poor Dining Experience
Limited choices and unclear nutrition data reduce the dining experience.

limited data

Limited Operational Data and Difficult Food Traceability
Lack of data makes operations inefficient and food tracing difficult.

Self-Service Weighing & Checkout Solution

self weighing checkout terminal

One Dish, One Weighing, One Charge

Newcapec self weighing and checkout solution uses a pay-by-weight model, with each dish weighed and charged separately. Diners identify themselves via facial recognition, card, or QR code, then serve themselves as needed. The system automatically calculates the weight and price of each dish, updates the total in real time, and displays the details on screen. When diners return their trays, the system automatically unlinks the tray and processes payment, with receipts sent directly to their phones for a seamless checkout experience.

For operators, a touchscreen interface enables menu management, food level monitoring, replenishment, and alerts for abnormal conditions. Flexible options include tray-linked cashless payment, post-meal payment without tray binding, and mixed on-campus and off-campus payment modes to suit different dining environments.

AI Smart Checkout Solution

AI Vision for Fast Multi-Dish Checkout

Newcapec AI powered checkout solution uses AI vision and deep learning to recognize multiple dishes simultaneously and calculate the total automatically. Operators can upload dish images, prices, and nutritional information for quick menu setup and meal preparation management.

Diners select their meals and place their trays in the checkout area, where an AI camera instantly identifies the dishes and calculates the total. Face recognition, card, and QR code payments are supported, with checkout taking just 3–5 seconds per diner.

A rear touchscreen allows operators to monitor transactions, review records, analyze sales data, and handle refunds or checkout errors. No dedicated serving machine is required, and the system works with standard tableware. The desktop terminal can be installed directly at existing serving counters, minimizing renovation costs and deployment time.

Fast and Accurate Checkout with Batch RFID Recognition

Newcapec RFID checkout solution uses RFID-tagged bowls to identify multiple dishes simultaneously and calculate the total automatically. Operators can write dish information and prices to the bowl chips, with support for both permanent and temporary data writing.

After selecting their meals, diners simply place their trays in the checkout area and pay via facial recognition, card, or QR code. Transaction data is automatically uploaded to the smart dining management platform. With offline operation and automatic data synchronization when the network is restored, the system reduces queues and minimizes manual errors.

Solution Value

Reduce Labor and Operating Costs

Automate the entire dining process—from food selection and weighing to pricing and payment. The self-service weighing solution eliminates the need for dedicated cashiers, while the AI smart checkout solution allows a small number of staff to supervise multiple terminals, helping reduce peak-hour staffing requirements and overall labor and management costs.

Reduce Labor and Operating Costs

Fast Checkout, Seamless Payment

AI-powered checkout takes just 3 - 5 seconds per diner, with a single terminal capable of processing up to 200 diners in 20 minutes. With the weighing solution, food is priced automatically during selection and payment is completed when the tray is returned. Diners can choose facial recognition, card, or QR code payment, significantly reducing queues during peak hours.

Fast Checkout, Seamless Payment

Flexible Portions, Less Food Waste

Diners can choose what they want and how much they want, with weight-based pricing allowing portions to match individual needs. This makes food consumption more flexible and helps reduce leftovers. In a Tsinghua University deployment, food waste collected in the weighing area decreased from approximately two bins per day under the traditional counter-service model to just 0.3 bins per day, providing a measurable reduction in food waste.
